Lamb prices down

Payments to meat producers for alpha, YL, and PL grades of lamb will be reduced from Monday as a forerunner to big reductions in sheepmeats schedule prices for the new season. .The PL grade will be 202.5 c a kilogram, including Government supplement (16c reduction); the YL grade will be 193.5 c (down 32.5 c) and the Alpha 202.5 c (down 74.5 c).

Further reductions were likely from October 1, said the Meat Board yesterday.

The board moved in advance of the full new schedule, to be published before October 1, because it had become clear that some producers intended to send in new season’s lamb during September to take advantage of the Government supplement.

“Only limited numbers of lightweight lambs are required at present,” said the board.

“The changes reflect the commercial reality that returns from the marketplace cannot justify the current schedule and also take account of the recent strengthening of the New Zealand dollar.”

For next week’s schedule the rest of the lamb, mutton, skin and beef prices are unchanged.
