AUSTRALIA Gold prices slide

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier as overnight cuts in the world gold price took the fire out of precious metal stocks, brokers said. They said an easing of tension in South Africa and investor uneasiness over higher interest rates contributed to the market's bearish tone. By the close of trading, the all ordinaries index had dropped 7.8 points to 937.8 and the all industrials had shed 6.1 points to 1371.5. The gold marker fell 39.7 points to 1074.0 and the all resources nine points to 602.2. The highlight of trading was a turnover of three million shares in BHP, of which two million were crossed by a Sydney broker, Bain and Company, at 702, 6c below the market price. Speculation continued that Adelaide Steam or Robert Holmes a Court’s Bell Group is the likely buyer. BHP shares lost 4c to 708 in onmarket trading, while CSR shed 3c to 288.
