New official secretary to Governor-General

PA Wellington A post-primary teacher, Mr Paul Canham, has been appointed the new official secretary to the GovernorGeneral. He will succeed Mr James Brown, who will retire soon. The State Services Commission chairman, Dr Mervyn Probine, said Mr Canham had been principal of Wanganui High School for the last 6% years. From 1973 until 1979 he was deputy principal of Hutt Valley High School. Before that he held teaching positions in New Plymouth, Timaru, Matamata, Ngatea,

and Upper Hutt. Mr Canham has a B.A. degree from Victoria University of Wellington and an M.A. honours degree from the University of Auckland. He was an Olympic trialist in rowing in 1956 and was also a university blue. He takes an active interest in many sports and has coached rugby, softball, rowing, and basketball. In 1981 he competed in an international marathon in Hamilton. Mr Canham has been involved in the development of Taha Maori at his school and has taken lessons in Maori language.
