Swiss protest over false passports
NZPA-Reuter Zurich Switzerland has lodged a formal protest with the French Government over the use of forged Swiss passports by agents accused of sinking the Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior.
Mr Michel Pache, chief spokesman at the Swiss Foreign Ministry, told Reuters in response to inquiries that the Swiss charge d’affaires in Paris, Mr Jacques Reverdin, had delivered the protest Note. The Note demanded further explanation from the French authorities and
called on the Government to prevent repetition of the infringement, Mr Pache said.
Swiss Government officials noted that evidence was mounting that the French secret service had provided its agents in New Zealand with forged passports. Mr Pache did not say whether the Berne Government concluded after studying the Tricot report that the French Government was responsible for the Rainbow Warrior’s sinking. Mr Bernard Tricot, author of the report, told
the Swiss news agency ATS that the passports were supplied by the French secret service.
The Swiss spokesman would also not be drawn to reveal the exact wording of the protest Note. Swiss officials have expressed irritation over the use of their passports by agents of a friendly neighbour. The Justice Ministry this year introduced new Swiss passports which it believes are more secure from forgery than those now in circulation. Further reports, page 4
