Free service to end

A free bill-paying service provided by Trustee Savings Bank in Canterbury for about 20 years will end on September 16 when the bank will charge a 20c fee for each bill paid.

The service has been offered to customers of the bank who hold budget accounts. The customer deposits money in the account and the banksends invoices and cheques by post on behalf of the customer, saving the customer postage and envelopes. The bank’s general manager, Mr Frank Dickson, said yesterday that the service had been kept free for as long as possible and even the 20c charge would not pay for the costs involved. “We should have charged a base fee some time ago. We have to make some effort to recover some costs,” he said.
