Judge deplores level of violence in N.Z.
Violence in New Zealand was now at a level that was totally unacceptable, said Judge Anderson in the District Court yesterday.
He told David Anderson Fowler (Miss E. H. B. Thompson) that in his view the courts must show that this type of conduct would not be tolerated.
Fowler, aged 23, unemployed, was jailed for three months.
He appeared for sentence on a charge of assaulting a man with intent to injure him.
Miss Thompson said the offence was not premeditated but reactive. Fowler who had an artificial leg,
was not looking for trouble. The complainant as a result of the assault by Fowler and his associates, required 20 stitches to the scalp, suffered severe bruising to the back and shoulders, and was admitted to hospital. The offence occurred on April 4. PERIODIC DETENTION Compensation of $1982 was ordered to be paid by a man who fraudulently obtained this sum after stealing his former employer’s cheque book on being made redundant. Stephen Bruce McLintock, aged 19, a labourer (Mrs D. J. Orchard), was also sentenced to periodic detention for four months. McLintock initially intended to use the cheques only to make up for what he felt was due to him but after finding how easy it was he became greedy and negotiated more cheques.
