By DAVID LEGGAT Christchurch’s top two soccer teams, Christchurch Brother United and Hurricane Rangers, will by vying for the city’s spectators in their respective matches, which clash on Sunday afternoon.

Both matches have plenty of interest, but for different reasons. Rangers will be attempting to qualify for the Rothmans League playoff series when they meet North End United, at Rangers Park; while a few kilometres away, D.B. Wellington will be trying to win’ the national league championship by beating Christchurch United.

Rangers beat North End, 2-1, in the first leg of the Hertz League championship at Dunedin last Sunday. That was achieved against a below-strength North End team, with two goals in the final 15 minutes, and without the services of their captain, lan Cowan.

The bustling midfielder is back after suspension but the Rangers coach, Mr Bill McDonald, admitted yesterday he is uncertain if there is a place for Cowan. He has not finalised his starting lineup, but indicated, a reluctance to tamper with the team which won, if unconvincingly, last Sunday. “It would be dangerous to sit back and defend,” he said. “We almost got unstuck doing that sort of thing last week-end.” Christchurch United will be looking to end a bitterly disappointing season on the right note, and gain revenge on a Wellington team which convincingly beat it earlier in the seasn. Of particular interest will be the form of the Wellington attacker, Billy Harris, whose 13 league goals put him one behind the individual leader, Colin Walker, of N.Z. Permanent Gisborne.

Harris has a point to prove, having surprisingly

missed a place in the New Zealand World Cup squad. Wellington has consistently produced the most entertaining soccer in the national league this season and victory on Sunday would give it a fitting prize.

Hanimex-North Shore’s title hopes received a crushing blow yesterday when a goal by Paul Rosser in the final seconds gave University Cowan a 3-2 win in Auckland. Dale Webster scored twice for University and Barry Weymouth did the same for North Shore.

In the other five league matches on Sunday, North Shore will again meet University; Gisborne, which could win the title if United beats Wellington, will play Southmall Manurewa in Auckland, Masport Mount Wellington will meet McKee Nelson United, Napier City Rovers will play Landbase Papatoetoe and National Mutual Miramwar will entertain 4XO Dunedin City.
