Broken jaw tour threat for Crequer
(by Kevin Page) A broken jaw suffered by the Kiwi rugby league wing, Marty Crequer, may cost him a trip to Great Britain with the New Zealand team.
Crequer sustained the injury during Hornby’s 14-12 major semi-final loss to Halswell on Sunday. It was only discovered after the game, in which Crequer, who scored a try, that the jaw was broken.
The Hornby coach, Mr Frank Endacott, said that his star wing’s jaw was wired up, and Crequer would be out of action for four to five weeks. “He’s finished for us this season. It’s all hanging on his tour away now,” he said.
“Graham Lowe, the New Zealand coach, has asked for a report in two weeks time. At the moment it
doesn’t look too good,” he added.
Mr Endacott said Crequer, one of four Kiwi tourists from the Hornby club,
would be training with the club, and concentrating on sprinting and weight training. • “We’ve got him on a special diet at the moment to keep his weight up. We can’t have him on liquids and losing weight. “Mr Lowe is looking at complications after the wires come out, but we’ve assured him that the break is not that bad.”
“It’s a wait and see thing now,” he said. Crequer made his international debut in 1983 against Papua New Guinea, and scored a try in New Zealand’s 60-20 victory.
Since then he has been out of the international reckoning, but came back with a series of fine displays in Canterbury’s impressive provincial run this season.
