Axeman scratched

PA Auckland The glamour galloper, Axeman, will not start in the $30,000 Tim Rogers Stakes at Wanganui tomorrow. The co-owner and trainer, Kevin Griffin, of Whangarei, said yesterday that the big chestnut was “a bit sore” on cooling off after a brilliant workout at Ruakaka yesterday morning. The regular rider, Warwick Robinson, made a special trip from Hamilton to Whangarei for the gallop to decide whether he should take the mount on Axeman in the Tim Rogers Stakes. Robinson will now ride at Avondale, where he has engagements for Librici, Nobelßed and Rule the Waves. Griffin said he was bitterly disappointed at having to scratch Axeman. “I was after a third win in the Rogers Stakes to equal Gloaming’s record,” he said. The cause of the gelding’s soreness was a mystery which he hoped would be determined by extensive Xray examinations at a Takanini veterinary clinic next week.
