Meat sales rise

Retail demand for all meats in Britain improved this week because of cold wet weather, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers Board. Domestic beef prices improved slightly at wholesale and pork also improved by Ip a lb at wholesale level. Domestic lambs improved by 1.5 p a lb at live auction and from 4 to 6p a lb at hooks. New Zealand lamb sales volumes were up against the previous week with agents reporting the trend could be continued for another week as well. They attribute the gradual return to interest in New Zealand lamb partly to a restocking process and partly to weight selection and pricing

problems with the home killed product. On the Smithfield market this week New Zealand PL grade lambs were quoted at 64.5 to 65.5 p a lb (SNZ3.6I to 3.67 a kg). Trading on the United States imported manufacturing beef market started the week slowly, but finished with firm prices. Pre-Labour Day holiday demand held up prices at last week’s levels in the face of reduced supplies of both domestic and imported product. Prices for New Zealand bull and cow beef remained unchanged at SUSI.OI and SUSO.BB a lb c.i.f. respectively (SNZ4.O7 and $3.54 a kg).
