AUSTRALIA Gold shares jump

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed barely steady as buying interest declined in all sectors except gold. Brokers said share prices were unable to sustain the levels reached in early trading and drifted lower on investor hesitancy ahead of next week’s Federal Budget. The gold index shot up 28.1 points to 1078.9 on the strength of a sharp rise in world gold prices overnight. Brokers said the market was influenced by both a weaker Australian dollar, which helped to firm prices in early trading, and fears of higher interest rates. The national turnover was 82.7 million shares valued at $37 million, with rises leading falls by 315 to 183. BHP traded more than two million shares on broker speculation of a tussle between Adelaide Steamship and Robert Holmes a Court’s Bell Group. The stock opened 4c firmer at 716, but closed steady at 712. CSR dropped 4c to 316. The Canadian-based Placer Development, Ltd, the major owner of Kidston gold mine, requested suspension from exchanges after its major shareholder, Noranda Pacific, announced plans to sell it 31 per cent stake to the public. Noranda topped the mining turnover list on its second day of trading with 3.8 million partly paid shares exchanged at 46c, a gain of 4c. Noranda’s ordinary shares rose 1c to 75c.
