N.I. schools win top music prizes

PA Wellington ‘ Schools from Auckland and Havelock North took the top prizes in the 1985 Westpac School Music Contest at the end of the national finals in Wellington. The Andira Trio from Epsom Girls’ Grammar School, Auckland, won the instrumental section and the winners of the vocal section was the First Fifteen from Havelock North High School. More than 2200 students throughout New Zealand took part in the 12 district

finals culminating in the final in the concert chamber at the Wellington Town Hall. Mr Russell Bond, the judge for the final, praised the “exceptionally high” standard of all the finalists. The awards were presented by the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall. The contest was organised by the Music Federation of New Zealand. The winner of the original composition contest, Ross Carey of Wellington, also played his winning composition.
