Peter Johnson for Australia

PA Auckland Takanini’s Peter Johnson, the leading Auckland and Waikato jockey last season, has accepted a contract to ride in Australia.

He will join a Melbourne trainer, Rick Hore-Lacy, who runs a big stable at Epsom. Johnson said that his contract was to ride for HoreLacy through the major Australian spring carnivals. If things went well he would consider remaining in Australia.

Johnson has already been successful in Australia. On one trip he rode the daily

double at Rosehill, on Happy Union and Oakwell.

Now aged 26, Johnson made his mark quickly in racing as a leading apprentice.

After being out of racing for a time, he returned last year for his first full season in New Zealand for years. His target was 100 wins—he failed by just one. Hore-Lacy’s team should provide him with good opportunities, including as it does the former New Zealand horse, Colonial King, and a Melbourne Cup hope, Foxseal.
