More visitors in ‘quiet’ season
Wellington reporter Growth in overseas visitor arrivals, which usually taper off between March and July, has continued well into the “quiet” season, according to figures from the Tourist and Publicity Department. The latest figures for May, 1985, show an 18 per cent rise in visitors over May, 1984, up 6276 to 40,792. This indicated that marketing and promotional ef-
forts to encourage more people to come to New Zealand during the traditional off-peak periods were having an impact, said the Minister of Tourism, Mr Moore.
One example of these efforts was tne campaign in Australia, promoting New Zealand as an attractive holiday destination in the off-peak season. More than 22,000 Australians had visited New Zealand in May, 1985, which was 24.7 per cent up on May, 1984, he said. This represented 4372 extra visitors and because Australia was New Zealand’s biggest visitor market it represented 54.1 per cent of all visitors during the month. Australian arrivals for the year ended May 31,1985, were 271,078, an increase of 16.7 per cent on the previous year.
