Strong rise likely in minimum wage

The Government seems resolved to lift the minimum wage significantly above its present level of $lOO a week and perhaps close to the unions’ $2OB claim. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said yesterday that at Wednesday’s talks with the Federation of Labour
there had been “a substantial meeting of minds.”
He also said a “realistic” increase was needed.
The clearest indication, however, that a big rise is in the offing was the concern Mr Lange expressed about the impact the increase would have on award relativities.
“Do you squeeze them together or do you cut out the bottom rung,” he said.
