Ship’s maiden voyage

The Shipping Corporation’s newest container vessel, the 13,880-ton New Zealand Mariner, arrives at Lyttelton today on her maiden New Zealand voyage. The ship, formerly the Ulanga, sailed to Lyttelton from Europe. Formerly owned by the German firm Deutsche AfrikaLinien, she has worked from North European ports through the Mediterranean Sea to the Arabian Gulf. The ship, which does not have cargo cranes or hydraulic hatches, was selected from

about eight other vessels by Shipping Corporation buyers. She has been altered at a Hamburg shipyard to suit New Zealand requirements, including installing a 20ft container cell guide system, strengthening hatch covers, and improving crew accommodation. After unloading cargo in Lyttelton, Wellington and Auckland, the New Zealand Mariner will begin service on the Tasman run later this month.
