Enrolment urged for third form
Parents who had not yet enrolled their children for next year’s third-form classes at Christchurch secondary schools were urged to do so as soon as possible, said the regional superintendent of education, Mr Colin Knight. The official closing date for enrolment was July 31, but it was apparent by the number of applications received so far by Christchurch State secondary schools that a lot of pupils had yet to enrol, he said. “Under the terms of the Christchurch Secondary School Enrolment Scheme, which has now been approved by the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, the State secondary schools in Christchurch have been given a total third-form quota which must not be exceeded,” M~ Knight said. “The quota level in each case is sufficient to enable all in-zone applicants to be accepted, plus a reasonable
number of pupils wishing to enrol from outside the geographic zone.” Mr Knight said that until all in-zone applications were made, schools were unable to tell how many out-of-zone applications to accept. “It is important for the schools to know with some certainty the number of third-form entrants for 1986 so that subject and class
timetables can be prepared,” Mr Knight said. Those pupils lodging late applications might find that some of their first-choice subjects were not available, he. said. “It is estimated that some 350 pupils have yet to make application to enrol at high school in next year’s third form. We need to know for next year’s planning what proportion of these missing pupils have moved from Christchurch and what proportion have yet to make application to enrol,” Mr Knight said.
