Decision welcomed

PA Wellington Federated Farmers yesterday welcomed the Government’s decision to defer interest rate increases to new-farm settlers in severe financial difficulty.

“This decision will be some help to a small proportion of farmers hard hit by the Government’s moves to restructure the economy,” said the federation’s president, Mr Peter

Elworthy. “It, of course, still leaves the majority of farmers well out in front of other sectors in the adjustment process. “Many of these farmers

also face severe financial difficulties as lower prices and higher costs begin to impact further on the industry. Their position will also need to be reviewed,” said Mr Elworthy.
