Maori TV team for Gov.-Gen.
PA Auckland TVNZ has assigned a Maori television production team to provide the official live coverage of the swear-ing-in of the new GovernorGeneral, Sir Paul Reeves.
The ceremony will be in Wellington on November 20. The assignment is seen by some Maori people as a major victory for Maori broadcasting. Ernie Leonard, executive producer of “Koha,” the 15minute Sunday evening programme, will produce and direct the outside broadcast coverage of Sir Paul’s swearing-in, which is likely to be sold to Britain.
The coverage will last 90 minutes and will be broadcast in English and Maori on TV2 from 11.30 a.m. on November 20. Mr Leonard said it was
“significant” that Maori programming personnel were asked to cover the swearing-in of the first Maori Governor-General.
“A great many Maori still smart from the actions of one of the first governors, Sir George Grey,” he said. Mr Leonard plans to turn the coverage into “something special” with part of the programme taking the form of a mini-documentary on Sir Paul’s life as well as a look inside Government House.
The “Koha” producer, Mr Morihu McDonald, will direct the documentary while Tainui Stephens will front the programme. Mr Leonard hopes to interview in Maori the Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Wetere, for the programme.
