New case for Phar Lap’s heart

NZPA-AAP Sydney Stewards on a flight from Canberra to Sydney on Tuesday night could be excused for not serving coffee to P. L. Dingley in the economy section. ; Mr P. L. Dingley occupied the seat next to Michael Dingley for the duration of the flight but the conversation did not exactly flow. P. L. Dingley was a heart — the heart of the famous thoroughbred Phar Lap — being brought to Sydney to be prepared in a new display case. The giant 6.5 kg heart has been preserved in solution

for 50 years next to the heart of a normal horse in the Museum of Australia in Canberra.

Michael Dingley, of the Museum of Australia, took both hearts to the Australian Museum in Sydney where they will be resoaked and remounted in new display cases.

Both hearts will be taken back to Canberra in several months time and go on display in a new wing of the Museum of Australia being built near Lake Burley Griffen. Special seats were arranged on the flight to keep the hearts in an upright position.
