Women on theft visit
NZPA-AAP London An English seaside resort was hit by a shoplifting orgy after 18 coachloads of women arrived in town, the Torquay Magistrate’s Court was told. The London “Sun” newspaper said that 800 women, arrived by bus in the afternoon and by evening shoplifters among them had stripped shops. Scores of the women split into small “raiding parties” as soon as they left the buses, it reported. They then went on a “professional, experienced, and organised shoplifting spree,” netting goods valued at thousands of pounds. Shop staff were overwhelmed by the numbers of women involved, Inspector Henry Martin told Torquay magistrates. “Some of the women held carrier bags open while others put clothes in,” he said.
“They seemed to have come here with the express intention of shoplifting.” Only two women were caught in the act, as police said identifying other culprits proved “almost impossible."
