General faces tough job
NZPA-Reuter Freetown The election of a popular army general as leader of Sierra Leone’s sole political party may herald a peaceful presidential changeover later this year, according to diplomatic and Sierra Leonean sources. Major-General Joseph Momoh faces a mountainous task in repairing the West African nation’s shattered economy. The Armed Forces chief, General Momoh was unanimously endorsed by delegates on Saturday to succeed President Siaka Stevens, aged 79, as head of the All People’s Congress by 700 delegates. Under the Constitution, the congress leader will stand as the only presidential candidate in elections scheduled for October. Two former contenders for the congress leadership backed General Momoh and pledged their faith in Sierra Leone’s future under his presidency. Crowds cheered as General Momoh and President Stevens toured Freetown’s dilapidated streets in an open car after the party congress. The diplomatic and Sierra Leonean sources said General Momoh’s wide popularity was likely to ensure him a political grace period. ■4
