Chch Catholics have new vicar-general
A new vicar-general has been appointed to the Christchurch Catholic Diocese. He is the Rev. Mathew Duggan, the Sockburn parish priest, who succeeds Monsignor Thomas Daly, of Addington parish, as vicargeneral. Father Duggan will now assume the title of Monsignor. The vicar-general ranks second in the diocese to the Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev. Denis Hanrahan. He is responsible for administering marriage procedures in the diocese, and assumes the Bishop’s responsibilities whenever the Bishop is unable to perform his duties. Father Duggan came to New Zealand in 1952 from Cork, in Ireland, where he was ordained the same year.
The Bishop has also announced the appointment of a new college of consultants, who are the Bishop’s chief advisers.
They are the Rt Rev. Thomas Power (parish priest, Kaiapoi), the Rev. James Nicholas (Woolston), the Rev. William Middleton (Temuka), the Rev. Raymond Schmack (Halswell), and the Rev. John Fitzmorris (assistant priest, Catholic Cathedral).
