Softballers planning a permanent home
A proposal for a permanent headquarters for softball drew most interest at the forty-seventh annual meeting of the Canterbury Softball Association yesterday. The association has been discussing the possibility of Hansen’s Park becoming the home of softball with the city council’s Parks and Reserves Department. Unanimous support came from the meeting for the executive to negotiate with the council the development of a fully enclosed softball complex. The meeting further
agreed to various funding options to be taken over the next two seasons.
As a result, the association will now take full proposals to council to develop a ball park. To back up this move, the association president, Mr Dale Eagar, told the meeting that figures recently released by the New Zealand Softball Association showed that Canterbury was now the largest association in New Zealand, with over 3500 participants in the greater Christchurch area. These figures represented a 100 per cent plus growth
rate over the last five years.
Other business at the meeting centred on changes to player registration, and matches played on a time limit basis, while the only contentious remit, one dealing with a fee for player transfers, was lost.
Officers elected were.— President, Mr D. Eagar, vicepresident, Miss D. Gooseman; secretary-treasurer, Mrs J. Lynn; executive, Messrs J. Eagar, G. Dunn, L. Butts, K. Eagar, G. Gordon, Mesdames R. Bryers, A. Tunui, H. Herbert, Miss J. Turuwhenua. The junior advisory board president is Mrs J. Gould.
