Bout over in half a minute

Doug Thompson, of Papanui, needed only half a minute to finish off his opponent, Richard Currie (Barry’s-Monier), in the “fight of the footballers” at the Richmond Working Men’s Club yesterday. A former Canterbury and South Island rugby league prop, Thompson produced a power-packed right to demolish Currie, who represented New Zealand in an age-grade rugby union international as a front-row forward. Both were making their boxing debuts. Shorter, stockier and younger than his rival, Currie was dazed and required a mandatory eight-count within 20s of the start. He had not managed to strike a blow in reply before Thompson, quick in his reflexes, delivered two more right-handed punches to end the bout.
