N.Z. Marketing Institute set up

After 10 years of “muttering” New Zealand has got its own marketing institute, says the first president, Mr Keith Jones, the marketing and development manager for the Countrywide Building Society. The idea has been floating around New Zealand for 10 years, but last September Mr George Crawford, the managing director of Crawford Marketing Services, Ltd, called a public meeting to see what interest there was in a marketing institute, and a steering committee was formed to create the Marketing Institute of New Zealand. The institute is seen as important in developing marketing skills in such areas as distribution, selling, public relations, and advertising. Mr Jones agrees that there might be some areas of duplication, such as with the export institute, but he says that the export institute is solely concerned

with exports, but the marketing institute is specialising in all areas of marketing, both domestic and overseas. “In Australia, if a person going for a marketing job is a member of the Australian Marketing Institute, and had done its courses, then that was a 10 in their favour,” he said.

The marketing institute was setting up marketing courses in New Zealand,

which would help employers looking for marketing people. New Zealand is one of the last of the developed western countries to have a marketing institute. The United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia already have such organisations. At a meeting last week, a Christchurch marketing institute committee was formed, consisting of: Dr Rob Brodie, a senior lecturer in business administration at the University of Canterbury, Mr Humphrey Catchpole, New Zealand marketing manager for PDL Industries, Ltd; Mr John Chilton, the general manager of the East Coast Fertiliser Company, Ltd; Mr Wayne Ormandy, the account director of Saatchi and Saatchi Compton; Mr Rod Sara, the marketing manager of Crown Crystal Glass; and Mr Jeremy Wilson, the product manager of Tasman Rental Cars, Ltd.
