Joyner collects three awards
Ronnie Joyner, the quietlyspoken American-born Ponsonby (Auckland) player who was keen to play for Canterbury this season, was on Saturday in Wellington named as the most valuable player in the Countrywide national men’s basketball league for 1985. Joyner won three awards, for top player, leading forward, ana membership of the elite five-man All Star squad. He was a late replacement for an injured Angelo Hill for Exchquer Saints (Wellington) last season, but when the Saints management selected the maximum number of American players, two, for this season, he was bypassed. The management remained loyal to Hill. Joyner looked for a new club and Canterbury interested him, but that was as far as he got. This season Joyner averaged
52.6 a game, for a total of 895 points and a high of 65 points. A fellow American, Willie Burton, of Übix Palmerston North, was the top rebounder with an average of 16.2 (Palmerston North also won the free-throw award with a 73.2 average), while another Palmerston North player, Tyronne Brown, was chosen as the outstanding guard. Top New Zealand-born awards went to Tony Smith, of Hamilton Supersport (guard), and Stan Hilf (D.B. Auckland) as the leading forward. Tony Complain (Ponsonby) was named as the New Zealand player (under 23) of the season. Other awards included Bill McNicol (The “Star,” Christchurch top photographer, and Lea O’Connor (the “Taranaki Herald”), leading journalist. Once again, Caroline Gray, of Hamilton, dominated the women’s awards.
