Netball Canty unbeaten
Canterbury was the dominant team in the Skellerup netball tournament held at the South Hagley courts at the week-end.
The round-robin tournament between Canterbury, Canterbury Country, Otago, and Southland, served as a useful warm-up to the national tournament in Wellington later this month. Four of the six matches were played on Saturday in cold, wet conditions. Canterbury started well, beating Southland, 37-21, then . it overwhelmed Canterbury
Country, 51-23. Otago also had two good wins, accounting for Southland, 43-29, then beating Canterbury Country, 43-29. The deciding matches were played yesterday in improved weather. The netball was of a better standard and the matches more competitive. Canterbury played controlled, consistent netball to clinch first place when it beat Otago, 49-30. The third place went to Canterbury Country, which beat Southland by two goals in an exciting final match.
Both teams played with determination and the result was in the balance until the final whistle. Results:— Canterbury 37, Southland 21; Otago 43, Canterbury Country 29; Otago 39, Southland 21; Canterbury 51, Canterbury Country 23; Southland 31, Canterbury Country 33; Canterbury 49, Otago 30. Canterbury’s next representative fixture will be against teams from Otago, Wellington and the Australian Institute of Sport on August 17 and 18. Matches will be played at the Hagley Courts on the Saturday and indoors at Cowles Stadium on the Sunday.
