Opinions differ at the Port of Lyttelton as to whether Pacifica’s new ship Spirit of Competition should be known as “Spoc” of "Soc.” Her sister ship the Spirit of Free Enterprise has settled happily with the name “Sofe” (pronounced Sofie), but the debate between “Spoc” and “Soc” continues. The latter option is considered by some to be more correct as a strict interpretation of her name—following the same lines as “Sofe.” However, those who favour “Spoc” believe the extra letter gives a more rounded name with a better sound to it. To add to the confusion, there is a temptation to call her the Spirit of “Free” Competition, but this problem should be overcome with wider usage. Now that the Spirit of Competition has started the Lyttel-ton-Wellington run, some consensus will have to be reached to avoid confusion. ARRIVALS Spirit of Free Enterprise (7 a.m.), 1204, Wgtn, (Pacifica). Kiezergracht (8.30 p.m.), Napier, (Scales). DEPARTURES Spirit of Free Enterprise (4.45 p.m.), 1204, Wellington, (Pacifica).
