Vatican loans link alleged

NZPA-AP Geneva A World Council of Churches researcher said yesterday that a Vaticancontrolled bank was involved in new loans granted to South Africa during the last two months. Ms Eva Militz said that the Swiss-based Banco di Roma per la Svizzera, in which the Vatican’s Institute per le Opere di Religione, lor, has a 51 per cent interest, participated in

loans totalling $216 million. The loans were lead-man-aged by German banks and dated June 17 and July 11, she said. Ms Militz is the author of a recent council-financed study which says that banks in 20 countries, chiefly Britain, Switzerland, and West Germany, were involved in more than SUS 4.2 billion ($7.9 billion) to South Africa between mid-1982 and 1984.
