Coal dust dispute settled

An hourly allowance will be paid to Railways van guards to compensate them for the nuisance of coal dust when they are in vans at the rear of trains carrying export coal from the West Coast to Lyttelton. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the National Union of Railwaymen, Mr Paul Corliss, declined to say how much the allowance is, but said that it was less than ?1 an hour and was enough to satisfy the guards that they were suitably compensated for the coal dust nuisance. They had complained that the dust got into guard vans and had taken industrial action to get the Railways Corporation to eliminate it. The allowance, agreed to by the guards at a stopwork meeting yesterday, is described as a temporary allowance to be paid while further investigations and trials are held to see whether sealing of the vans in some way might eliminate the problem of dust. Mr Corliss said that the union had withdrawn all bans and threats of action.
