Public Notices IS LOCALISED AIR POLLUTION INCREASING? SOLID fuel appliances are sometimes Installed and operated incorrectly resulting In more pollution particularly for immediate neighbours. Some residential areas previously accepted as being relatively free from air pollution are now suffering from this nuisance. In calm weather the pollution Is obvious and may be sensed by anyone. Ground level pollution may be reduced by increasing the height of chimneys; we suggest 2 metres above the ridge or highest point of the house. Some space heaters were originally manufactured with dampers that could be completely shut, so that the appliance may be operated with a “dead” fire resulting In “fuming." These heaters are usually capable of modification and manufacturers should advise on procedures when asked. Heaters will not burn cleanly or efficiently with incorrect fuels and bonaflde coal and wood merchants will advise; make sure you are operating your appliance according to instructions. The Clean Air Society does not advocate the use of solid fuel appliances In Clean Air Zones. But custom as well as commercial Interests have promoted the extensive sales of solid fuel appliances. Users, suppliers and manufacturers of solid fuel appliances are asked to actively assist in the clean air campaign by ensuring that appliances Installed are used In such a way as to reduce air pollution to a minimum. We assert that dampers should not be completely closed or that stoves be operated at low heat outputs. To operate with a “dead” fire Just to heat domestic water creates additional localised air pollution even out of the winter season. Issued by the New Zealand Clean Air Society Incorporated, P.O. Box 2363, Christchurch in the Interests of Cleaner Air. Join and support the Society. Annual Subscriptions $2.00, donations may be claimed as a Tax Rebate. NEW BRIGHTON HERTZ A.S.C.
