AUSTRALIA Gold stocks fall

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier, with resource stocks under selling pressure following overnight falls in metal prices, brokers said. They said United States moves to cut Government spending saw the American dollar rebound on international money markets, resulting in a SUS 7 fall in the New York gold price overnight. Australian gold stocks fell across the board, despite support from off-shore interests as the South African crisis continued. Near the close of trading, the all ordinaries index had dropped 3.3 points to 936.6 and the gold index had slipped 12.7 points to 1045.5. The all industrials marker firmed 0.5 points to 1364.0 and the all resources indicator fell 6.0 points to 605.5. Brokers said off-shore interest in leading resource stocks declined as the U.S. dollar firmed, with CRA falling 24c to 586, CSR 6c to 328, Bougainville 7c to 205, MIM 12c to 268 and Western Mining 13c to 415. Broken Hill added 2c to 676, while North Broken Hill slipped 2c to 228. Among gold stocks, Central Norseman fell 16c to 950, Metana 15c to 320, Poseidon 10c to 425 and Emperor 10c to 420. Peko shed 10c to 465 and Kidston 2c to 508, while GMK rose 10c to 1140, Sons of Gwalia 7c to 275 and Placer 80c to 2650. Closing
