Thurber’s dogs still bark
Thurber’s Dogs. By James Thurber. Dent Paperbacks, 1985. 254 pp. $9.95 Thurber wrote wonderfully about dogs. Thurber wrote wonderfully about almost everything he chose to write about, and dogs are one of his favourite subjects. Having said that one should make the point that this collection of Thurber’s dog pieces shows that he was capable of
having an off-day, even on the subject of dogs. Not all the pieces collected here are masterpieces. But even on his offdays a great humourist is still better value than an average humourist doing his best. “The Departure of Emma Inch” and “The Dog that Bit People,” both included here, are among the major works of Western literature. — A. K. Grant.
