Maori teaching

Sir,—Mr McLay seems to suggest that Labour’s plans to elevate people disadvantaged by the present and past education system, are bringing others down to the lowest common denominator. Anyone who is not academically inclined or not geared for science and technology is in some ways disadvantaged anyway. An appreciation of the Maori culture and bilingualism can only help both cultures see the creative, spiritual, heritage of Polynesian culture, thereby helping Europeans to react creatively, instead of cramming peoples’ heads with facts and figures which may or may not be beneficial out in the work force.— Yours, etc., D. WATSON. July 29, 1985.
