Kaikoura bull sale
Angus bulls attracted spirited competition from North Canterbury and Marlborough breeders at the annual Kaikoura bull sale this week. Thirty-seven Angus bulls from two vendors averaged 52489 and 33 Herefords from three vendors averaged $1906. The Hereford bulls suffered from a lack of buyer support and eight bulls failed to attract any interest. The vendor with the best average price was the Woodbank stud of Estate J. Ross Murray, Clarence Bridge, who sold 16 Angus bulls at $2656. Last year the Woodbank average was $1406. The Woodbank bulls were of good size and conformation and were keenly sought by commercial breeders. The top individual price was $4500 for a Woodbank bull bought by Summerland Farm, Blenheim. Twenty-one Angus bulls
from estate W. N. Masefield, Ellerton, Kekerengu, averaged 52361, compared with $1971 last year. The top Ellerton price was $4400 for a bull bought by Richmond Brook station, Seddon. P.S.T. Davies, of Charwell, Kaikoura, was the only Hereford vendor to sell his full consignment. Ten bulk averaged $lBl5 (compared with $1416 last year) and his top price was $2750. Two Herefords were passed out of 15 offered by J. G. Murray and Sons, Matariki, Clarence Bridge. Their average price was $2210 ($2279 last vear) and the top price was $4200.
The average price for 10 Herefords from S. J. Chaffey, Homai, Kekerengu, was $1784, a slight decrease from last year’s figure of $1792. Six Homai bulls were passed and the top price was $4200.
