Economic measures
Sir, — The decision of the National Party to restore national superannuation without extra tax must win the approval and the votes of the over 50s at the next election. Considering that the Prime Minister admitted recently that the tax appeared to breach the spirit of Labour’s election promises, it would be both honest and expedient to drop it now. Also, with the majority of electors against GST and with National prepared to axe it, as an election platform if it is introduced, it would be selfdefeating to continue. The question must be asked whether any Government should be permitted to introduce highly controversial legislation on economic or any other issues that was not part of its election manifesto without a referendum. Unless democracy has another meaning the wishes of the majority should prevail. That cannot be seen to be happening. — Yours, etc., J. SHARP. August 1, 1985.
