AUSTRALIA Gold stocks rise

NZPA-AP Sydney * Australian sharemarkets closed firmer, propelled by shortage of scrip and high institutional liquidity, brokers said. They said the market opened strongly, with gold stocks forging ahead on the back of a 300 c an ounce increase in the New York gold price overnight. Speculation that CSR may have found a buyer for half its Delhi subsidiary also buoyed resource stocks. Near the close of trading, the all ordinaries index had added 3.7 points to 939.8 and the gold index had climbed 11.3 points to a record 1058.2. The all industrials index rose 2.7 points to 1363.5 and the all resources marker gained 4.4 points to 611.5. The National turnover was 64.2 million shares, valued at $69.4 million, with rises outnumbering falls by nine to five. Further conflict in South Africa reinforced off-shore interest in domestic gold stocks, with Renison adding 20c to 540, GMK 10c to 1130, Poseidon 10c to 435, Sons of Gwalia 8c to 268 and Emperor 5c to 430. Placer, however, fell 80c to 2570 and Central Norseman 4c to 966. Kidston was steady on 510. A beach sand miner, Consolidated Rutile added 10c to 600. CSR firmed 9c to 334, following its 7c gain on Wednesday. BHP rose 8c to 674, CRA fell 4c to 610 and Bell Resources shed 16c to 700. North Broken Hill eased 2c to 230, Bougainville 3c to 212, and MIM 3c to 280, while Western Mining added 5c to 428. Santos gained 30c to 600, Vamgas 10c to 410 and Howard Smith 10c to 495 as buyer interest returned to Cooper Basin stocks after recent oil and gas finds, brokers said.

Industrial stocks were quiet, with Castlemaine easing 6c to 754, Coles 4c to 382 and TEL 6c to 670.
