Firemen killed
NZPA-AFP Draguignan, France Five firemen have been killed in forest fires round the fashionable southern resort city of Cannes. Thousands of hectares of trees have been destroyed, rescue workers said yesterday. Four firefighters, three of them volunteers, died when their truck caught fire on Wednesday. Another fireman died yesterday and four were taken to hospital suffering from burns. A resident of the nearby town of Mandelieu said the sky suddenly grew dark across the whole of Cannes Bay. “We thought night had fallen in the middle of the afternoon. The fire stopped a few dozen metres from the houses,” he said.
