Chemicals banned

PA Wellington The Health Department has banned four chemicals that might cause cancer from being used to manufacture hair dyes. The department’s deputy director of clinical services, Dr Bob Boyd, said investigations by the Toxic Substances Board showed that the chemicals, used in dyes overseas, might cause cancer. The board has also recommended that two other chemicals be phased out because of their toxic chem-

ical properties. “None of the four banned chemicals is in use in New Zealand. One company was considering using one of these chemicals, but after being advised that the chemical could be toxic it dropped plans to go ahead with the proposal,” Dr Boyd said. The two chemicals to.be phased out are l-methoxy-2 4-diaminobenzene and 1 4-diamino-2-nitrobenzene. The phasing-out period is being negotiated with the industry
