New survey on jobless

More than 1500 Christchurch households will take part in a new unemployment survey later this year. The Statistics Department will conduct the survey, which is designed to show the true level of unemployment. It will begin in October when departmental staff visit 12,000 households selected at random throughout New Zealand. The results are expected in February next year. Households will continue to be on the survey, which will be done quarterly, for up to two years. Follow-up surveys will be conducted by personal visits or telephone calls. The results would provide

regular, comprehensive, and timely information about the labour market, said a spokesman for the department. Present information about the jobless was mainly obtained from the census, which was held every five years, and the unemployment registers, which were believed to understate the numbers without a job. Individual information provided to the department would remain confidential, said the spokesman. The survey work would create 90 part-time and 14 full-time jobs, she said. A total of between 1500 and 2000 households would be surveyed in Christchurch and Rangiora.
