Youth soccer cup revived
The national youth soccer cup, one of the premier trophies in the 19705, is to be revived, in slightly different form, next year. The competition will be known as the New Zealand Junior Football Association Trophy, and will be contested by associations, rather than clubs. j The national youth | cup began in 1973, and continued for several seasons, with Christchurch United and Rangers dominating it. The competition, which was for under-18 players, was dropped in 1978. This time, players will have to be under the age of 17 on, or before, August 1 to
be eligible. Associations will compete within the seven N.Z.J.F.A. regions to find the eight quarter-finalists. Two teams will advance from region one, encompassing Auckland, as it is the biggest in playing numbers. The quarter-final draw wil be fully open and the costs of the teams will be paid by the N.Z.J.F.A. from the semi-finals on. The N.Z.J.F.A. tournament controller, Mr Ivan Steer, said it was considered overdue to revive interest at that age level. “We had to do something, otherwise there was nothing for that age group.”
