Samba crane ready to start work

Work at Lyttelton’s container terminal should be getting back to normal now that the Samba crane is ready to start work. The terminal has been fairly quiet since February 15 when the main container crane was wrecked in a berthing accident. Only those container ships that have their own cranes, or would use the temporary mobile cranes have been able to use the terminal for the last five months. Most of the big Japan service and United Kingdom service ships have been diverted to Port Chalmers because of the time it would have taken to unload them with the temporary crane. The Samba crane is expected to bring the terminal’s handling rates up to the levels achieved before the February accident. The first container ship due is the Aotea, which was expected yesterday but has been delayed and is now due tomorrow. ARRIVALS Express (4.45 p.m.), 15,939, sea (U.M.S.).
