Table tennis trio in unbeatable form

A.B.L. Riccarton took command of the winter A grade table tennis competition, when its team of Grant McCarroll, Ling Nan Ming and Graham Lamb, swept aside Printshop Avonside, 12-0, in the latest round of the inter-club championship. The Riccarton trio was in devastating form, especially McCarroll who breezed through his three singles without dropping a game. He seems assured of winning the R. G. Hart Trophy for the A grade player with the most singles wins for the season.

The previous competition leader, Auto Centre Avonside, was held to a six-all draw by Merivale Pharmacy Riccarton, but won on a count-back of games, 15-13. Last year’s New Zealand under 16 champion, Karl Entwhistle, attacked fluently to win all his singles while his team-mate, Peter de Boer, improved his game and won two singles, as did Riccarton’s John Armstrong. Avonside 111, ably led by Graeme Rhind, improved its position with an 8-4 victory

against Riccarton Rovers, and Dallington gained its third successive win by beating Riccarton Evergreens. Nigel Maynard and Denis Kalin were unbeaten in singles play for the successful side.
