Overseas doctors sought
PA Auckland Hospitals may have to recruit about 300 doctors overseas if the Health Department approves restrictions on junior doctors’ working hours. The department has told hospital boards that 478 people are available for appointment in 1986. The boards had told the department they would need 633. This is before establish-
rnent of extra positions to improve hours and working conditions of junior doctors. The Resident Medical Officers’ Association and Government representatives agreed last week to aim for a maximum of 16 consecutive hours, 72 hours a week for young doctors. A circular from the department to boards said it intends mounting an extensive advertising campaign overseas.
