Speed limits
Sir,—My wife and I recently returned from Nelson, and as we travelled along at a steady 100 km/ h, lots and lots of motorists were passing us at speeds of up to 130km/h or more, just like the bad old days before we were allowed to increase our speed. Mind you, they were driving safely, and I would have joineed in happily, but for the fact that my 29-year-old Rover 90 gets excessively greedy on fuel if encouraged. Some of the country’s great brains studied the advisability of increasing the speed limit on the open road for several months last year before reaching their decision. Now perhaps they could take a look at such roadways as Harper Avenue and Memorial Avenue, just to mention two of many roads where 70 and 80km/h are quite normal. They might, if they were not hurried, suggest 70km/h, which would make what is already happening not quite so outrageous.—Yours, etc., F. S. ATKINS. July 23, 1985.
