Mr Nixon and the bomb

Sir,—One can only guess why Richard Nixon chooses now to boast that on four occasions he considered using nuclear bombs against the Soviet Union (“The Press," July 23). One can be sure that it was not statesmanly wisdom or considerations of humanity that he did not. Prudent selfpreservation was the rather ignoble reason that he refrained from taking this final catastrophic step. Mr Nixon has provided proof that the nuclear bomb — the Soviet nuclear bomb — is the deterrent

agent in today’s threatened world, but this is too uncertain a precaution against nuclear disaster. Noone can guarantee that a more unprincipled, or more unstable character than Mr Nixon will not be elected President of the United States.—Yours etc., M. CREEL. July 23, 1985.
