Escaping charge
A man who is said to have escaped from Paparua Prison on Tuesday and been recaptured yesterday was remanded in custody to August by Judge Bishphan in the District Court yesterday on a charge of escaping from lawful custody. Manawanui Joseph Matthews, aged 26, a tattooist, was also charged with possessing cannabis seeds. No pleas were entered. THREE BURGLARIES A housewife who admitted breaking into three houses in Glandovey Road, Straven Road, and Fisher Avenue, was convicted and remanded to August 5 for a probation report and sentence. Margaret Anne Beall, aged 28, committed the offences between June 15 and July 10. Simon John Beall, aged 20, a cook, was remanded to the same date for sentence after admitting burgling the Glandovey Road house with his wife on June 15. Each defendant was allowed bail of $l5OO. No police summary was read. Sergeant W. J. McCormick said that a remand was sought to enable further inquiries to be made regarding the “considerable” amount of property involved. SMASHED WINDOW Damage costing $6OOO was caused by a Mustang sports car driven by Norman David Clarke which went out of control in Wor-
cester Street and crashed into a butcher's shop, said Sergeant McCormick. Clarke, aged 20, a motor mechanic, who admitted refusing to give a blood sample on May 15, was convicted and remanded to August 5 for a probation report and sentence. The charge was to have been the subject of a defended hearing but Clarke changed his plea. ESCAPING CHARGE Simon Allan Kerr, aged 24, unemployed, charged with escaping’ from Mount Eden Prison, was further remanded in custody to August 1. Kerr, who was arrested by a team of detectives near the Harewood crematorium on July 16, is also charged with burglary of the East End service station in Ferry Road, and of a Linwood Avenue butchery. The police say that Kerr escaped from Mount Eden Prison on May 17. The Judge was toid. in the application for a week’s remand, that “a host of charges" from the Auckland area was expected. KNUCKLE-DUSTER A man found in possession of a spiked knuckleduster in the Bush Inn told the police it was for his protection although he had not had occasion to use it, said Sergeant McCormick. Douglas Charles Milne, aged 20, a labourer, was convicted on this charge, and on another of giving false particulars. He was
fined $225. The Judge ordered that the weapon, which the defendant had made, be forfeited to the police. Sergeant McCormick said the knuckle-duster was found on Milne after he attempted to interfere when the police, in a routine visit to the hotel, spoke to a girl aged 17. The Judge said some people had the wrong idea about carrying weapons for self-defence. The carrying of such weapons was unlawful, he said. THEFT OFFENCES Stolen property valued at $3138 was recovered when the police visited the address of Rodd Noel Perreau, aged 18. unemployed, said Sergeant McCormick. Perreau (Mr K. J. Grave) admitted five charges of theft committed between July 11 and 15. He was convicted and remanded on renewed bail to August 9 for a probation report and sentence. Property taken by the defendant included four wheel assemblies, and eight car badges, from car firms; and a cassette player and tapes, a sheepskin jacket, and a pair of sunglasses, of a total value of $1430, from a parked car. Perreau told the police he intended to sell the stolen property as he needed money, said Sergeant McCormick. The car badges, prised off vehicles, were taken because the defendant thought they looked attractive.
