96 doctors sign petition
PA Auckland Ninety-six young Auckland doctors have signed a petition saying they are prepared to walk off the job or resign to get better working conditions. Thirty-five have also signed a petition criticising “appalling working conditions and levels of remuneration” and pledged to seek jobs in Australia unless there is an improvement within two months. The petition has been circulated by a first-year
house surgeon at an Auckland hospital. He said he did not wish to be named for fear of recriminations. He is a member of the Resident Medical Officers’ Association but he is not acting on behalf of the group. The house surgeon said many young doctors were disgruntled about progress on negotiations and the lack of any written commitment from the Government. They believed that the politicians were procrastinating.
