Wool groups to form association
Wool scourers, woollen millers, and carpet manufacturers plan to form a new association to represent their interests. Proposals were put to a recent meeting in Christchurch and will be developed and referred back to the members of the Woolscourers’ Association, the Carpet Manufacturers’ Association, and the Textile and Woollen Mills’ Association for endorsement. The chairman of the meeting, Mr Neil Tucker, said that the meeting had been called because of the increasing percentage of the wool clip which was now being processed into carpets, yarn, fabric, or scoured wool before
export. “Growth over the last two or three seasons has been quite pronounced and there is a mood of buoyancy among all the processors,” Mr Tucker said. “Everyone is very keen to maintain the momentum, but there is considerable anxiety that Government policies on both farming and manufacturing could stifle the development of this valuable and job-rich export trade. “That is why the three sectors want to act in concert in developing a better understanding among politicians, growers and the public of the benefits of adding value to wool,” said Mr Tucker.
